With message activity, owners, admins, and members with permission can see how many people have interacted with a given message in Slack. You can use message data to measure the impact of announcements and internal communications campaigns. Owners and admins can view message activity for their workspace or Enterprise Grid org.
Slack has always given office administrators the ability to download and access conversations that take place on the platform. Previously, that just meant messages sent in public channels. But an update made to the platform in 2018 expanded the ability to access direct messages and conversations had in private channels.
A frequent inquiry we ran across in our research was “Can administrators see private messages sent in slack?”.
Administrators for a Slack team ( Unlike their counterparts at Stork or Zoom ) can see the contents of all private messages sent among team members. This is one way that administrators can ensure compliance with company policies and investigate any potential violations.
How do I View message activity in slack connect?
Note: Message activity is not available for messages in Slack Connect channels. You can view message data from the channel where the message was posted: Hover over a message and click the three dots icon. Select View message activity. If you’d like, click the date ranges under Activity over time to adjust the graph.

As The Verge notes, Slack is unveiling a new feature that will allow administrators to request a copy of anything that’s said within the app. And when we say everything, we mean it: All messages in all channels and all direct messages sent over the service.
As of May 2019 Slack’s privacy FAQ states that on a free plan, owners can request an export of all data, including private messages and channels. However, they must “provide (a) valid legal process, (b) consent of members, or (c) a requirement or right under applicable laws.”.
What is a slack direct message?
That would be the classic direct message. On Slack, DMs can be between two or more people, and the company explains that ” [they’re] visible and searchable only to you and the members you DM.” Sounds pretty good, right?
