SMS is fully integrated into Google Voice. If someone sends a message to your Google number, the service will route it to any mobile phones you have connected. You can reply to text messages from any phone as well, or via the Google Voice Web interface.

As for why carriers block these messages, it’s probably because they find Google Voice numbers somewhat shady and they’d like to minimize the spam calls and messages for their customers. While Google Voice is putting an end to forwarding messages to your phone numbers, you’ll still be able to send a copy of your messages to your email addresses.
If you don’t have a Google Voice number, Voice doesn’t support text messaging. You can upgrade your Google Voice account for free. If you recently paid to move your Voice number, your texts might not work until 5 business days after your transfer finishes. You can check the status of your number porting.
