By default Windows uses MBR disks. While all Windows can boot from a MBR disk, you can only boot from a GPT disk if you have a operating system (see below) that supports GPT and your motherboard has a EFI BIOS and is enabled. Windows 7 and Vista does support booting from a GPT disk.
MBR is the most common system and is supported by every version of Windows, including Windows Vista and Windows 7. GPT is an updated and improved partitioning system and is supported on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, and 64-bit versions of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 operating systems.
First, MBR can only boot in BIOS, and GPT can only boot in UEFI. Second, users can only create four primary partitions in MBR but can create a maximum of 128 primary partitions in GPT. Third, MBR can support up to 2TB, while GPT can handle unlimited storage space.
GPT is better than MBR if your hard disk is larger than 2TB. Since you can only use 2TB of space from a 512B sector hard disk if you initialize it to MBR, you’d better format your disk to GPT if it is larger than 2TB. But if the disk is employing 4K native sector, you can use 16TB space.
