ARW files are the RAW image files created by Sony Alpha cameras. Lightroom or Photoshop will automatically open files of this type, as will Windows Photos. On Mac, Preview will let you view but not edit ARW, so use the free Adobe Camera Raw application.
Is it possible to open ARW files in LR?
There should be no problem opening an ARW file in LR if you have a recent version. If you want NEF files you will have to buy a Nikon camera. Sony cameras can’t produce NEF files.

This will convert the ARW file into something more manageable like a JPEG, DNG or PNG. Adobe products are powerful but only available via an expensive subscription service.

I ran the raws through Adobe’s DNG converter, I ran the raws through Sony’s software 2X, once converting via s. RGB and the second via Adobe RGB. Imported everything into Lightroom so I could see all the variations in the jpegs, side by side.
