On the 4th generation Apple. TV the IR sensor was located about ½ inch to the left of the LED on the box’s front side. Through experimentation I found that it has been moved on the 4K Apple, and tv. The new location is about 1″ in from the left side edge of the box on the front. Hope this helps someone else save some time.

It says that the 4 dots in a line in the lower left are the IR sensor.
