Rather than having to leave a group and start a new one, Google Meet is offering the ability to create breakout rooms, which are exactly what they sound like : new groups that branch off from the original group. Up to 100 groups can split off from the original call, according to Google.
At the time of writing, Google Meet doesn’t have a breakout rooms feature. You don’t get the ability to split the participants of the main meeting into different sessions or switch between them as a host.
Additionally, the feature is available to those who have the Google Workspace Education Plus license along with privileges to create and modify meetings. However, some users with the aforementioned Google Workspace editions are unable to use the breakout rooms feature.
In Meet, if the meeting moderator allows, you can join a breakout room and have a discussion in a smaller group. You can’t currently live stream or record breakout rooms. Open Calendar and create a new event.

Meeting participants are automatically distributed across the breakout rooms. To manually move people into different rooms, choose an option : Enter the participant’s name directly into a room. Drag the participant’s name to another breakout room. To randomly mix up the participants again, click Shuffle .
Under Event Details, click Change conference settings. On the left, click Breakout rooms. On your computer, start a video call. At the bottom right, click Activities Breakout rooms. Tip: To prevent students from having the ability to create breakout rooms, admins should reserve Meet creation privileges for faculty or staff only.
Can I run breakout rooms with a free Gmail account?
Any FREE gmail account user can use this extension to run meetings and manage breakout rooms for their participants who also have free gmail accounts. You do NOT have to be a Google Class room user or a Google Suite account user. Google has their own Breakout Rooms functionality which is different and they require purchasing an Enterprise edition.
Does Google Chrome have a breakout room feature?
While there has been no official word from Google on the matter, there are other ways to get the breakout rooms feature. Google Chrome users can get the said feature and much more by installing extensions available on Chrome Web Store.
