Yes you can get a sound for incoming messages on mobile apps. Not sure what your friends are using on their computers, but there won’t be a sound if they’re using webmail. I’ve used other email accounts through email client programs such as Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird on my computers, and yes I got pop-ups and sounds.
