Now Microsoft has updated Office for Mac so it runs faster on M1 Macs as well as the large base on Intel Mac’s. Apple calls these ‘two in one’ releases ‘Universal’ software.

Last month, Microsoft reacted quickly to Apple’s shift to ARM chips in Macs by releasing a beta of Office that was compatible. One month on, and Microsoft Office is now optimized for running on Apple’s M1 devices. This week, Microsoft released new versions of many of its Microsoft 365 apps that run natively on Apple M1.
Office for Mac now supports M1 chips directly. Microsoft Office 365 and 2019 for Mac (Word, Excel, Power. Point and Outlook) now work directly on the new M1 chip. There are a few ‘gotchas’ but support for Apple Silicon is almost complete. Apple is moving away from Intel chips to their own ‘Apple Silicon’ hardware, starting with the M1 chip.
Will Office 2019 run on M1 Macs with Rosetta 2 emulation?
As neuroanatomist said in the liked thread, Office 2019 and Microsoft 365 will run on the M1 Macs with Rosetta 2 emulation. A few days after this post a comment was added that a version of Office for M1 Macs was also released.
