Calendars manage your appointments; to do lists manage your tasks, but it’s useful to see both things at once. This is why Google Calendar has a built in to do list: Google Tasks. You can find it in Google Calendar right now, though it is a little hidden in the right panel.

How can I see other people’s calendars on Google Calendar?
When you do that, Google offers you a list of your contacts with people who have made their calendars public. Click on one of those contacts, and you’ll be able to see their events listed on your calendar. You can also try to add people whose calendars aren’t public.
