With all these apps — and even many more across the Microsoft spectrum — feature overlap is expected. For that reason, Microsoft Teams could someday replace Outlook and Yammer, according to Irwin Lazar, an industry analyst at Nemertes Research, based in Mokena, Ill. Yammer, in particular, could be the next consolidation target.
Here is what our research found. teams is focused on both one-to-many communication through channels as well as one-to-one messaging. In terms of purpose, Yammer is more suited for company-wide announcements with its social network features while Teams is perfect for small team communication needs within the organization with its robust messaging capabilities.
Yammer communities enable you to share knowledge and build relationships across your organization. You can pin the Communities app to the left side of Teams, enabling you to engage with leaders, watch live events, ask questions, get answers, and stay up-to-date with news and announcements from within Teams.
When we consider Teams, it’s also impractical and not necessarily productive for the executive team to join a variety of Teams across the organization. A better way of getting the barometer for company feeling – and to make sure employees know it’s a forum that they should be professional, and can share their views – is to use Yammer.
