Linux works very well on a Ryzen CPU and AMD graphics. It is especially nice because the graphics drivers are open source and work perfectly with things like Wayland desktops and are nearly as fast as Nvidia without needing their closed source binary only drivers.
One question we ran across in our research was “Are AMD drivers for Linux open source?”.
I learned as a general knowledge to report here, AMD drivers for Linux are open source, and integrated in the Linux kernel as well as installed by default on the majority of Linux distributions like Ubuntu (Search for xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu package).
Is there any tool to test AMD CPUs and GPUs on Linux?
While the official tools by AMD do not support Linux, there are many 3rd-party tweaking tools for AMD’s CPUs and GPUs on Linux. Right now, I am using a tool called “ Ryzen Controller “, which is a frontend for RyzenAdj. This tool allows you to control STAPM limits, PPT limits, temperature limits, VRAM and transmission frequencies limits.
But a reality that’s beginning to surface is that Clear Linux is also the optimal choice for AMD processors as well. Whether it’s AMD’s monstrous Threadripper CPUs or a lowly AMD Ryzen 3200U processor shipping inside a $199 laptop, Clear Linux is constantly winning a battery of performance benchmarks.
Does linux work on m1?
Linux Runs Gracefully On Apple M1 Chip With Ubuntu running on Apple Mac Mini M1, we have a successful Linux port for Apple Silicon. Apple’s M1 chip is continuously in the buzz because of its impressive capability of monstrous performance on their own ARM-based Mac. Book and Mac Mini.
Will Linux ever get GPU support for the M1?
Linux might get some bare-bones GPU support for M1 eventually, but it’ll never be well-supported unless Apple opens up hardware documentation for the GPU (or provides a driver themselves, either open or closed-source). This is a road Linux has been down many times before.
There is a secure boot on the Mac and it a kind of key that matches the OS that is being booted but this can be changed by the user. The hold-up with not yet having a Linux to boot on M1 is not Apple.
Is Linux better than Windows for graphics cards?
Another benchmark by Phoronix for other graphics cards and CPUs is also reporting that AMD on Linux is actually better than AMD on Windows.
What is Apple’s M1 chip and should Linux users care?
Apple’s M1 chip is continuously in the buzz because of its impressive capability of monstrous performance on their own ARM-based Mac. Book and Mac Mini. And, for that reason, many Linux users want to get their hands on them.
